Hi, this is George. You may know me from the FintechOrama YouTube channel. You are getting this email because you’ve signed up on Thinkific or Substack. If you’re new, welcome!
This newsletter will provide updates on the Alternative Investments Course, insights into the investment space, and educational resources.
If you’re not new, thanks for coming back for more. I am back after a short (erm.. a few months actually) summer break.
Billions & Banking
Billions Season 5 is back, finally!
Many exciting things are happening there, but one particularly caught my attention is Axe’s obsession with “becoming a bank” or at least getting a bank charter.
I’ve tried to understand what Axelrod could actually do with a bank. In other words, “how could he take advantage of the leverage opportunities provided by owning a bank to maximize the profit at Axe Capital?”
The short answer is that it’s tricky and limited because even Bobby Axelrod would have to comply with banking regulations. Dive into this with this video:
And the question that follows naturally is what should he do instead. I’ve spent a lot of time searching for an answer, and I found one clear opportunity. Like many other Alternative Investments managers, get inspiration from Warren Buffett: Buy an insurance company instead!
I’ve discovered it’s a strategy that some of the largest Alternative Investment managers like Blackstone and Apollo Global Management ($1T in assets combined) are leveraging to the max. Still, it’s not that well known to outsiders.
I hope you enjoyed this analysis on YouTube. There will be more on that topic.
Career Advice & Educational Content
Some of you have generously provided some feedback, and two areas of interest stand out:
Careers: how to break into finance, quant investing, trading, etc.
Learning about advanced financial topics
These are two areas I am going to focus on with the podcast. I will be interviewing some leading experts, leaders and entrepreneurs and separating the conversation into two parts.
The first part is a career talk. The guests will share how they got there. I’ll also ask for tips on how to break into their industry.
The second part is a breakdown of a specific topic.
I will be sharing the new episodes in short formats soon, and I’m super excited about it. I think it will be a great source of information for anyone who wants to move forward without going into formal education and spending tons of time and money on a degree.
With my first two guests, I will be talking about
Careers in ‘Quant’ & Breakdown of the VIX - with Christian Kahl (Mathematician and MD at Fincad)
Jobs in front office & Breakdown of Special Situations - with Jim Osman (Trade and entrepreneur)
You can subscribe to the podcast ‘The Fintech Files” on YouTube and the usual podcast platforms.
